ON JANUARY 28, 1929, THE 1st CONGRESS OF UKRAINIAN NATIONALISTS WAS OPENED
The congress went on for six days - from January 28 to February 3 - in Vienna and became a landmark event in Ukrainian history. It gathered together the UVO (Ukrainian Miliraty Organisation) members, the Legia of Ukrainian Nationalists, the Ukrainian Nationalist Youth Union and the activists of Ukrainian student organisations, who agreed to unite efforts in the form the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). The UVO had formed the new organisation's core and Colonel Yevhen Konovalets became its first leader.
The OUN is a living example of true heroism and self-sacrifice in European history of 30-50's. At a time when Polish authorities had been taking new and new anti-Ukrainian chauvinist steps all-over the the western Ukrainian lands, and eastern Ukraine had been bleeding under the red Moscow occupation; when foreign invaders were trying to turn freethinking Ukrainians into disenfranchised and silent servants on their own land, there was a powerful and uncompromising force that set itself the goal to win the Ukrainian Independent Unified State.
