PRESENTATION THE IDEAS OF A LATVIAN INTERMARIUM THEORIST IN KYIV

There are only two theories of the Intermarium geopolitical concept, that are well-known in Ukrainian society - the Black-Sea Doctrine by Ukrainian geopolitical thinker Yuriy Lipa and the Intermarium by Polish marshal and statesman Jozef Pilsudski. Unfortunately, the rest of interesting theoretical developments on the Intermarium, as well as attempts to implement them, have been unfairly ignored.

However, the situation gradually turns better. In particular, an exhibition devoted to the outstanding Latvian General Peter Radzins held on December 16 at the Embassy of Latvia in Kyiv with the assistance of the Congress of Ukrainians of Latvia and the Society of General Peter Radzins. During the exhibition the Latvian guests have held a digression into the life of General Radziņs, who undoubtedly is a significant figure for the development of the East Europe joint regional space.

General Radziņs claimed that Ukraine plays a key role in the Intermarium defense alliance as well as it has a significant geopolitical value for whole the Blatic and Black Sea region.  Another key point to remember is that he had contributed to Ukraine not by a word but by a deed, occupying the key posts in Ukraine's military structure - first being a Head of the Organization and Training in Hetman Skoropadsky's army, and later the Latvian officer served as a Deputy Chief of Staff in the army of Ukrainian Republic. Every success and failure of the fighters for Ukraine's independence he took as own, keeping in mind, that the future of the Baltic States had been solved in Ukraine once before, in 1709, when the Russian Empire gained control over the Baltic on the results of the Battle of Poltava.

The exhibition entitled "Latvian Army general Peter Radzins in the history of Latvia and Ukraine," was attended by a wide range of official and civic diplomats Ukraine and Latvia, including the Ambassador of Latvia to Ukraine Juris Poykans and the Deputy Chairman of the Union of Officers of Ukraine Yevhen Lupakov, as well as cultural figures and historians, including Serhiy Kovalenko, an autor of the book "Chorny Zaporozhtsy: the regiment history" (which, in particular, describes the life of Karlis Broje, a Lithuanian commander of the 2nd battalion of the Cossack regiment). as well as representatives of nationalist organisations of the both countries (the Visu Latvijai!, the National Corps, the Svoboda and the Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists). Representatives of nationalist organisations of the both countries have also visited the event, among them the Visu Latvijai!, the National Corps, the Svoboda and the Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists. In addition, a Lithuanian volunteer of the Right Sector Volunteer Corps - participant of the war in Donbass was present at the event.

Quite positive point is that the exhibition initiators had not confined it to the level of a usual historical digression. It is wonderful, the representatives of the Lithuanian nationalist party and the Society named after Peter Radzins are shared his geopolitical views, the Visu Latvijai! (All for Latvia) international secretary Dace Kalnina had actively communicated with Ukrainian colleagues during a half-week long visit to Ukraine. We also offer you a video address by Raivis Zeltits, a Secretary General of the Latvian National Alliance on the Intermarium and the future of Europe at whole, in which he touches upon the ideas had been declared by the Latvian theorist of the Baltic-Black Sea integration.

"Union of Baltic states could be a very strong factor; thus is why Soviet Russia also pays much attention to the idea of such union. It spends all its resources and all its strength to dismantle such a union, so the Soviet Russia in future would not have to fight in a continuous front from Nordic Ocean to river of Dniester.
What will the Baltic States do? Euro federalists are reluctant to the idea of Ukraine joining the EU – the state that led a revolution and shed blood in the name of Europe. We have to help Ukraine, because it is moral and it is in the interests of as all. We also have to help Visegrad states, because it defends such a European Union, where national identity is respected. We don’t have to blindly follow the lead of federalists in Brussels, because we ourselves are Europeans, no less than those in Brussels. And we can create the Europe of future.
We don’t want neither tower of Babel, neither towers of Kremlin – we just want to be and to remain Latvians!" - Zeltits concludes.

No wonder why Agris Purvansh, a head of the Society of General Peter Radzins, presented his vision of the Baltic-Black Sea union along with geopolitical program of the National Corps during the Steel Pact (between East and West) international metapolitical conference, that gathered the nationalists from Poland, Croatia Serbia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and other countries of East and Cental Europe together in the capital of Ukraine on December 17.

Of special note is the of the VILKAČI folk band, whose performance created an unforgettable atmosphere in the hall of the Latvian embassy. At the exhibition the musicians had sang traditional songs of the Latvian Riflemen, and later continued their concert program in an informal setting at one of Kyiv pubs.

Summing up, we would express the hope that General Radzins' profound reflections regarding Ukraine will be published in a book form soon. His observations on the role Ukraine has been playing in Russia's claim to status of an European country, on heroic struggle of Ukrainian nationalists against the Bolsheviks in under condition of total absence of military and material support from the "troubled" Europe (the Antanta countries), as well as analytics of failures of both Petliura (groundless chauvinism against all that is Russian against the backdrop of the Hetman's ability to put the Russians talents in the service of Ukraine, wastefulness of the high command's delegations, lack of professional staff) and Skoropadsky (material dependence on the pro-Russian Protofis Industry, Trade, Finance and Agriculture Union, which refused to fund the army in the time of need; the convergence with Denikin and underestimation of the revolutionary demands) remain relevant to this day.
