THE 126TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTHDAY OF YEVGEN KONOVALETS
Today, on June 14, we traditionally mark the anniversary of birth of a loyal son of Ukrainian land, a prominent figure of the national-liberation movement - Yevgen Konovalets. While still a student, young Konovalets had conducted conscious social and political activity. A little later, in the age of 26, he took part in the creation of one of the most battle-worthy units of the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic - the Galician and Bukovinian kurin of the Sich Riflemen.
Unlike Grushevsky and his pacifist cohort, Konovalets had clearly understood the key significance of a strong army in the struggle for Ukraine's independence and statehood. His Sich Riflemen unit was an example of true national armed forces - flawlessly trained and patriotically educated.
The historical figure of Yevhgen Konovalets, his activities within the UVO and OUN nationalist organisations has always inspired young generations of Ukrainian patriots. Under his command the Sich Riflemen has become most combat-ready unit of Ukrainian army of the first part of XX century. Not accidental, the Azov regiment's sergeant school was named after him. "not to weep, but achieve" - to move toward the goal without stumbling. These words, which are carved on the coat of arms of the military school and at the hammer of the Chief Sergeant, ,serve as a credo and motivator for the Azovites. The school named after the eminent Colonel Konovalets is aimed to form a forge of further professional military personnel - defenders of Ukrainian statehood. Heredity of traditions is a key to future!
