Celebratory event dedicated to veterans of the Latvian Legion of the Waffen SS took place in Riga

March 16, ceremonial events, dedicated to the Latvian Volunteers - legionaries of the Latvian Volunteer Legion of the Waffen SS took place in Riga and other biggest cities of Latvia. The veterans are marched by the central street of the Latvian Capital at the monument of Freedom in company of the patriotic youth of Latvia and other states. 

A few dozens of elderly people came to the monument of Freedom to honor the memory of the fallen soldiers of the Latvian Legion volunteer Waffen SS. They held a ceremony of laying flowers, passing to the memorial through the makeshift alley of national flags, created by a young patriots. The solemn event was finished with performance of the national anthem of Latvia and the memorial divine service at the Dome Cathedral. In general, about 300 people join the ceremony.

Anoothe ceremonial event took place in Lestene village, at the Fraternal Cemetary of the Latvian Legionnaires. Latvian nationalist organisation "Daugavas Vanagi" (Daugava Hawks) are one of the chief organizers of the celebrations. 

Russian Foreign Ministry has already condemned the memorial ceremony, calling this as a resurgence of Nazism and hatred towards the Russian-speaking residents of Latvia, contrary to the laws of the EU and Latvia! At the same time the president of Latvia - Andris Berzins condemned the anti-fascist "extremists" who tried to prevent celebrations in the center of Riga and laying flowers at the monument of Liberty.
