ON THE NEW EDUCATION LEGISLATION AND NATIONAL MINORITIES RIGHTS - AN ANSWER TO HUNGARIAN AND ROMANIAN CLAIMS
Certain Hungarian, Romanian and Moldavian officials expressed indignation due to a language aspect of new education reform in Ukraine - which, among other, protects the right of Ukrainian children to study on their native language and obligates schools to hold classes in the national language. Among those indignified ones are the Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania Victor Mikul and Moldova's President Igor Dodon.
As official Budapest, Chisinau and Bucharest emphasize, instead of giving full freedom to Ukrainian citizens of non-Ukrainian origin in the humanitarian sphere, Kyiv keep supressing the rights of minorities, which could lead to bloodshed. Even after minimal consideration of the question it becomes clear that the accusation are based upon the air. According to Ukraine's new legisation on education, representatives of national minorities are guaranteed the right to education on their own language. However, if keep on making such kind of grand gestures towards some national minorities the government can accidently cross the non-return point one day.
On the other hand, speaking of "linguistic justice" it would be fair if those of above mentioned Ukraine's neighbours treat to Ukrainian minorities in their countries in accordance with remarks they put towards Kyiv. For example, in the Marmara region and Southern Bukovyna - where the majority of the population (more then 51 thousand people) are Ukrainians - the Romanian authorities could finance the establishing of Ukrainian educational institutions or cultural and artistic centers. Instead, over the past 5 years, Bucharest has deliberately made every effort to ensure that Ukrainians in Romania lose their national identity. As regards Budapest, for 26 years Hungary has been investing heavily in Hungarian-language and Hungarian-cultural education in the Zakarpattia region of Ukraine. The statistics of the last 3 years shows that 75% of school graduates in regions inhabited by ethnic Hungarians don't have poor knowlage of Ukrainian gramathics and history.
Hence, the issue of oppression of national minorities remains partially unsolved. Unfortunately, this particular situation show that some officials on the gerion's countries still haven't realized how important it is to maintain peaceful relations between the peoples of Europe in the terms of today.
