VIKTOR ORBAN AND THE HISTORICAL LESSONS

Latest statements by Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban cannot be determined otherwise as a mistake, which can cause to disastrous consequences not only for Hungary, but for whole Eastern Europe. And it's not only about that even in the case of hypothetical conflict with Ukraine, in which Hungary concedes Ukraine on all counts - from human resources and geographical location to relations with its neighbors.

Of course, Hungary's ruling party adopted a number of tough and positive decisions, that we support by 100%, that is: rehabilitation of national history, support of traditional family, strict immigration policy, counteraction to abortions, etc.

All these steps caused a growing sympathy to the country's leadership among supporters of right-wing and conservative views all over Europe as well as hostility of the cosmopolitan EU mafia. It would be logical in this situation to seek for allies among neighbouring nations, who are ready to similar reforms and joint moving by the way of national resistance. Instead, Orban and his party actively turns its neighbours and friends to overt enemies. Previously Hungary had a similar experience.

In 1867 the Habsburgs have transformed their empire to Austro-Hungary. Then Hungarians got not just a great possibility for the free national development, they got a power over half of the empire and its peoples. Transleithania, a Hungarian part of the monarchy included Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Ukrainian Zakarpattia (Transcarpathia), the Romanian Transilvania, lands in the North of Italy and, of course Hungary itself. However, rather than contribute to strengthening of the empire's nations Hungarian elites have abused the King's trust and deploy the cosmopolitan policy of "Magyarization" - assimilation of non-Hungarian peoples at newly obtained territories. As result, this policy leaded to growing hostility between Hungarians and other peoples of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

It should be noted that the policy implemented by the Austrian monarchy was characterized by much adequate relation to the issue of the empire's nations. As result of their "wise national policy" Hungarians got the Treaty of Trianon, according to which Hungary lost 72% of its territory and 62% population (including 3 million ethnic Hungarians) as well as outlet to the sea and navy, 88% of forest resources, 83% of iron industry and 67% banking and credit system. On the occasion of signing the agreement a national mourning was proclaimed throughout the country, all national flags were half-mast till 1938.

Today Hungary has openly strained relations with all its neighbours, except of Austria. Of course, it's not a sharp conflict, but some tension is really available. In general, Hungary is a typical Eastern European country, its main interests are same as in any other neighbouring country, that is: preservation of national identity, protection of native traditions and resistance to the EU pressure. However, its government consistently makes same mistakes, as half a century ago. Worsening relations with Ukraine is another confirmation of that conclusion.
